Meet the Bands: Opening Night

Sureena Johl

The heart of downtown Sacramento pulses with vibrant energy every Friday night as 6,000 music-lovers gather in Cesar Chavez Plaza for Concerts in the Park. The free weekly music festival has been turning up the volume in downtown Sac for 25 years, and features local and nationally touring artists, along with Sac’s hottest DJs spinning between sets.

Meet the musical talents who will kick off our most epic season yet!

James Cavern

Indie/RnB/Soul Music

James Cavern returns to the Concerts in the Park stage for the third time! After a year break to focus on writing, James released his new anticipated “Lost and Found” EP this spring. His free block party release show for his EP was a huge success and demonstrated his influence on the Sacramento music scene.

What does Lost and Found represent to you?

The EP not only represents my next step as an independent artist, but more significantly, the community that has helped me along the way. Everything that’s gone into the EP, from its conception in the Warehouse Artist Lofts, to its production at Capital Christian School, to the inspiration and guidance from fellow artists, to YOUR contributions to this campaign, it reflects, in one way or another, this amazing community.

How has your music evolved over the years?

I’ve tried to constantly surround myself around artists who inspire me with the hope that it rubs off.

How can future and current fans access to your music easily?

You can listen to my music on Spotify or iTunes.

What are you looking forward to at Concerts in the Park?

Putting on a great opening show to set the tone for an epic music festival in the heart of downtown Sac.

If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be?

It’s gotta be J. Cole

Tessa Evans

Indie/RnB/Soul Music

After an amazing 2015 performance with Iconoclast Robot, Tessa Evans returns to the Concerts in the Park stage as lead support to James Cavern. Taking inspiration from everything she grew up listening to, including Motown, classic jazz, R&B, funk, and soul, Tessa Evans is sure to impress!

What is one fun fact about you and your band?

I don’t know…we all have our quirks! I’m always late, and always bring a mini bar to practice, lol. I also have to have my water, diet coke, and bourbon on hand at all times!! It’s 5 o’clock somewhere…

What food can you not live without on tour?

WingStop!!

Where else can we see your band play?

We’ve all played various festivals and gigs, but this will be our first show as a group all together!

Current Personae

Garage-Soul Band

Concerts in the ParkFormed in 2013, Current Personae is a garage-soul band weaving in and out of many other genres. The group has released two EPs over the past few years and has been performing all over the west coast. This energetic group loves to keep everyone involved with their music.

What was the first gig you played?

The first gig we played was at the Bob Hope Theater in Stockton, CA, opening for Grammy Award winning R&B artist, Anthony Hamilton, in 2013.

If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be?

Emily King or James Cavern

What is your favorite music venue in downtown Sacramento?

Shady Lady Saloon because of their laid back, old-fashion vibe.
