Dine Downtown: Skool Japanese Gastropub

Jordyn Anderson

For ten days in January, we give you an excuse to toss your diet out the window and indulge in some of Sacramento’s finest dining.

I’m talking about Dine Downtown, Sacramento’s favorite ten-day culinary celebration where participating restaurants create divine 3-course menus for just $35. It’s a STEAL.

This year, I was lucky enough to preview Skool Japanese Gastropub’s menu before it went live, and it was so dang good.

Here’s a sneak peek:

We started with the fresh seafood chowder and grilled garlic bread which ended up being my favorite dish. I can’t recommend this enough. It was light but rich and filled with seafood but not too much to deter a non-fish-fan.

The second course was seared albacore tuna over kabocha squash and kale risotto. The albacore had the perfect amount of crusted spices and the risotto was savory and creamy. Topped with pepitas, there was a subtle crunch to every bit.

We finished the meal with Green Tea Ice cream under a mascarpone whip and house shortbread cookies. I’m a huge fan of green tea ice cream so I was in heaven, but even if it’s not your go-to, paired with these cookies and whip, you’re sure to enjoy!

Last recommendation: pair it with the Kunishiro Sake. It doubles as a flavor enhancer and palate cleanser between each course.

Skool’s Dine Downtown menu was delicious. I’d recommend it to anyone who’s looking for something different. It wasn’t too heavy, but I was more than full and completely satisfied by the end of the meal.

Cheers to Chef Toshihiro’s masterful menu and the creative minds behind Skool’s welcoming look and feel.

We loved every minute of the experience!
