Small Biz Spotlight: Oblivion Comics & Coffee

Carly Quellman

Imagine a place where you can catch up with your favorite Marvel characters while sipping on a hand-crafted brew, where copious amounts of comic books and espresso shots are at your fingertips. At Oblivion Comics & Coffee, caffeine-enthusiasts and action figure-lovers join forces and fantasy becomes sweet reality.

National Comic Book Day is Sept. 25th, and who would be better to feature than the 2016 Calling All Dreamers contest winner, Oblivion Comics & Coffee? The comic book coffee shop was brought into the universe by long-time friends and co-owners, Laura Benson and Neil Estaris. The inspiration for the “geek hotspot” came to the pair late one night while ranting about the first Avengers movie. The idea led them to enter in the Calling All Dreamers competition, a business contest focused on helping entrepreneurs’ dreams come true. Laura and Neil’s combined passion for community, comics and lattes won them the competition, and downtown Sacramento’s new eclectic hangout was born.

The shop’s name and interior, inspired by the Oblivion Bar of the DC Comics universe, infuses futurism with graphic design. As you enter through the doors on 11th and K Streets, the floor melts into a mesmerizing galaxy print with Oblivion’s logo across it, feeling like a step into another dimension. The espresso bar, featuring coffee from Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters, contains a menu inspired by fantasy games, comics and shows. For example, the newest addition to their menu, “Winter is Coming,” is a nod at “Game of Thrones “ lovers everywhere. This specialty toast – a mixture of cream cheese, Oreo cookies and chocolate on French bread – is an edible representation of the popular fantasy television show.

In order to experience the geeky oblivion bar for yourself, make sure you venture in on National Comic Book Day, (which for them is every day!) Whether you peruse the action figures or mingle among the vast selection of vintage comic books, Oblivion Comics & Coffee has something to offer for Sacramento residents and tourists, both young and old. A refuge for both villains and superheroes alike, you have somewhere to go… into Oblivion and beyond.
