Based in the heart of Downtown Sac is what’s sure to be your new favorite caffeine hideaway (if it isn’t already). Nestled on the side of Capitol Mall, with patio seating for a picture perfect view of the Tower Bridge, is Old Soul Co.
While owners Jason Griest and Tim Jordan are OGs in Sacramento’s ever-growing coffee scene – supplying Sacramentans with their morning caffeine fix since 2006 when the duo opened their first location in Midtown – their latest offering, which opened in 2017, is sure to bring a boost to anyone who finds themselves in the heart of downtown’s business district. We stopped by a few days ago to relieve ourselves from the Sacramento heat and taste the menu for ourselves.
Once inside, we were treated with several coffee house staples that any shop worth their salt has perfected. Their latte was rich and creamy and their cortado (commonly known as a barista’s favorite), which mixes equal parts milk and espresso, was crisp and full-bodied. And for those whose palette needs something a bit sweeter, Old Soul also offers spiced chais, mochas, and their seasonal Maduro iced latte, served with plantain syrup, espresso, and topped with cocoa powder.
The location also offers a selection of rotating house-made meals that range from quick bites, like their macaroni and cheese, crafted with a IPA Mornay sauce and topped with parmesan breadcrumbs, to full plates, like the pork belly bahn mi, roasted pork bell, pickled daikon and carrots, jalapeños, and a ginger aioli, served on a freshly toasted baguette.
And if smooth espresso and scrumptious food isn’t enough for you, Old Soul Co. also has a wide offering of beers and wine. If you pop by for their 4-6 p.m. happy hour, you can enjoy $5 craft beer, including local picks like Big Stump and Sactown Union, and $2 off all wines.
