Downtown Biz Spotlight: Capital Books

Frankie Wenson

We’re all booked for the weekend!

If you haven’t heard, #DowntownSac is now the home of its very own independent bookstore! Nestled right next to the Crest Theater is our new go to place to purchase books, knickknacks and gifts just in time for National book lover’s day this Friday.

Heidi and Ross Rojek are the husband and wife duo behind Capital Books, which is the first bookstore to open its doors downtown in over ten years. The Rojek’s aren’t new to the entrepreneurship game, Ross has over 15 years of retail experience while Heidi has a 25-year background in marketing and graphic design. Prior to owning the bookstore, they started a book review company in 2008 and a few years later branched out into the tech industry making apps for their clients called GoLocalApps.

Even though these days most people are creating libraries on their phones and tablets instead of on actual bookshelves, bookstores aren’t dead. They are a place of sanctuary to many who like to hold a physical copy of the books in their hands and can physically flip through the pages as they read. When you come into Capital Books you can guarantee a genuine experience that you wouldn’t get on Amazon. The Rojek’s and their friendly dog Lily are there to greet every patron that walks through their doors and know their regulars by name making you feel like you are right at home. They want to get to know what their customers enjoy reading so that they can spark up a conversation with you to better help you find what you are looking for and even help recommend some literature you never thought you needed. If you stop in to pick up a book and a card for someone in your life, you can even get it wrapped in style with their complimentary gift wrapping!

If you don’t live in the Sacramento area but still want to support buying your favorite titles from Capital Books, you still can! Head over to their website and search for what titles you are looking for and have them shipped to you so you can still shop small and support a local business. You can also support your #DowntownSac bookstore by attending author events where you can come to the store to hear a reading from published authors! Later this year they will have Lisa McMann, Catriona McPherson, John Lander and Avanti Centrae so make sure to reserve your seat on their website so you don’t miss out on any of the upcoming events!

Let’s be honest… who doesn’t want to go to a bookstore where you can pet a dog with one hand and reach for books with the other!?

Here is what you need to do next time you are strolling through downtown:

  1. Come in Capital Books
  2. Pet a dog
  3. Purchase a book and support your local independent bookstore
  4. Feel good for the rest of the day!
