Don’t Fry Day

Maria Robinson

Memorial Day weekend is upon us and we all know what that means – BBQs, parades, Sacramento Music Festival, fun in the sun, and “Don’t Fry Day”! No, we’re not talking about forgoing a side of fries with your burger; we’re talking about sun safety.

The Friday before Memorial Day, May 27, is “Don’t Fry Day”, a day to promote sun safety awareness and to remind everyone to protect their skin while enjoying the outdoors. Skin cancer is on the rise in the United States, and the American Cancer Society estimates that one American dies every hour from skin cancer. Fortunately, skin cancer can be prevented and is easily cured if found early. And here’s a simple phrase you can use to remind yourself of the four key ways you can protect yourself from the sun: Slip! Slop! Slap! and Wrap.

  • Slip on a shirt
  • Slop on sunscreen
  • Slap on a hat
  • Wrap on sunglasses to protect your eyes
