Arts & Culture, Stay

Chalk it Up! Around Town this Labor Day Weekend!

Frankie Wenson

It’s going to be a colorful weekend in #DowntownSac!

Come out and experience all of the local art that will come to life during Labor Day weekend and celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Chalk it Up Art and Music Festival! Normally held at Fremont Park, this year the event is transforming into Chalk it Up! Around The Town for people to be able to enjoy the art at a distance on sidewalks, parking lots and driveways all throughout the greater Sacramento area. Over the years, the event has become the longest running event in the region and is a great way to help support local youth grants. The organization strives to “serve [the] Sacramento region by providing economic support for youth arts at all levels.” Even though operations of the festival are a little different this year doesn’t mean you still can’t plan to make a day of it!

Plan your trip to #DowntownSac this Labor Day weekend and visit all of the stops where you can see local masterpieces on the sidewalks of your favorite areas and see who is open for business. Take a look at the virtual map to see all of the locations where you can find the artists designs so you can plan your day.

Make sure you check out all of our downtown art locations that will be brightening up the sidewalks at 12th & K (IMAX), 7th & K (Ali Youssefi Square), Front Street & K (Delta King), 11th & L, 16th & L (Public House), 4th & K and 15th & K.

STAY A WHILE

Have you bookmarked all of the locations you are going to stop at? Good! Don’t just stay for the art but also all of the amazing food the Farm-to-Fork capital has to offer with shaded bistro seating! If you are headed over to the Old Sacramento Waterfront make sure to stop by Waterfront Park where you can enjoy a meal outside on our extended covered patio and listen to live music by Zach Waters from 2pm – 5pm on Saturday, September 5th and Amador Sons on Monday, September 7th from 12pm – 3pm. If you are planning on checking out some of our #DowntownSac themed chalk art at Ali Youssefi Square at 7th & K Streets make sure to stay a while and get a bite to eat from one of our participating businesses that are offering specials just for the weekend event! You can also take a seat at a distance at our shaded bistro tables while you enjoy your meal before going back out chalk art hunting!

Tiger

You might have already experienced some of Tiger’s new menu items during their weekend Ghost Kitchen events, but if you have yet to try all the mouthwatering goodness now is your chance! During Chalk it Up they are offering food and drink specials from their Atom Burger & Cali Bird menus, as well as a special kids menu, and “Happy Meals” for kids and adults alike. Milk shakes will also be offered, with or without booze!

Beach Hut Deli

It’s happy hour all day at Beach Hut Deli! Come by this weekend while checking out the art right in front and then stop by for a nice cold beer and sandwich. You can get your first draft beer for only $2 and get a free soda and chips with a purchase of a regular sized sandwich. You don’t want to miss this deal!

MURALS TO SPOT: While you are making your way through the Old Sacramento Waterfront to enjoy the live music, make sure to get out your camera and take a photo by our new mural created by local artist Jeremy Stanger.  The mural is on a storage container and features a colorful life size wave so you can feel like you are on a topical vacation every time you stand by it! The next mural you will see while walking through #DowntownSac is another storage container at Ali Youssefi Square painted by another local artist, Taylor Pannell of Taylor’d Mind Studios. The mural embodies the unity and love we should all have not just for our city but for each other because We are Downtown. Together. The mural is in partnership with the Black Artist Fund and has everything from abstract colors to poetry and greenery to make it the perfect opportunity to snap a photo and share the love with everyone you know!

The fun doesn’t stop there! You will also be able to listen to music while you walk around and explore the works of art all over the city. Chalk It Up will be live streaming music from local Sacramento musicians at their quarantine locations. You can steam the music all weekend from their website here.
