Celebrate Mom in Downtown Sac

Maria Robinson

Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Stumped as to how to celebrate the mother in your life? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

Dial that Number

More calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year. Pull out your phone and give your mama a call – it may just be the highlight of her day.

Time

I recently polled my mom friends and asked what they’d most like for Mother’s Day. Number one answer? Time – either alone or with girlfriends! Here are a few ideas to give moms a much-needed break from the everyday responsibilities of motherhood.

Pampering

byuti-1604Treat your mom to a day at the spa or a manicure and pedicure. There are great spas around Sac, but here are a few places to check out in the central city:

Allure Salon and Spa
Byuti Salon
Maverique Style House

Art

An afternoon with beautiful music, phenomenal art, and a fantastic lunch with friends is sure to please any mom. Head to the Crocker Art Museum and soak in the fascinating Andy Warhol exhibit then grab a tasty farm-to-fork lunch at the Crocker Cafe. The Museum is also celebrating Mother’s Day with a docent-led tour of family-themed works in the Crocker’s permanent collection and a classical concert featuring the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera Brass band.

A Meal for Mom

FullSizeRender[4]Celebrate mom with a tasty meal, either at a restaurant or made at home. The Downtown Certified Farmers’ Markets offer the perfect opportunity to grab ingredients for a delicious homemade, farm-fresh dinner. Grab your fruits, veggies and breads at the market then head to Allspicery for all the spices you’ll need to flavor your tasty meal.

Or forget the cooking and cleaning of dishes and let someone else do the cooking for you. A few of our favorite spots include HyattGrangeTen22, and The Firehouse.

Family Time

Family time, especially a picnic in the park, rated high in my poll. Fill your picnic basket with amazing sandwiches, salads, and baked treats from Estelle’s on K Street and head to a beautiful park where you can spread out a blanket and enjoy time as a family. You may even be inspired to fly a kite, play Frisbee, or throw a ball.

Old Sacramento is a great family destination and a wonderful place to spend Mother’s Day. Start your day off at Steamers for a fantastic breakfast or lunch then head to Anna Apple for parent-child cupcake decorating where you’ll create custom cupcakes using frosting, candy, fresh fruit and more!

Mother’s Day Tea

Mothers-Day-2016-1_CA auto museumMake your way to the California Auto Museum for Mother’s Day Tea and Talk: Gibson Mothers and their Flapper Daughters. You’ll hear from fashion historian Bonnie Hansen as she shares how the automobile contributed to one of the greatest generation gaps of the century – Victorian era mothers and their free-thinking flapper daughters.

Gifts for Mom

According to my poll, gifts are not necessary, but are certainly appreciated. Jewelry is always a sure-fire gift. Sharif Jewelers on 10th and K is one of our favorite places for gifts that are sure to dazzle the mom in your life.

A Sweet Treat

Andy’s Candywww.nicholaswray.com is a great one-stop shop to find everything you need for the sweet lady you call mom. You’ll find beautiful cards, unique gifts, and, of course, candy! My current favorites are the peach gummy candies and the prosecco gummy bears. And, as my friend pointed out, you get a bellini when you mix them together!

Mother’s Book

This idea came from one of my best friends. Her husband gave her a Mother’s Book. It’s simply a beautiful journal in which he writes a note each year. Now that their daughter is old enough, she can add a note too. It’s a creative and heart-felt way to celebrate mom.

Remembering Mom

For those without mothers, this holiday is a perfect opportunity to honor the mama who is always in your heart.

Wind Chime
Engrave her name on a wind chime and hang it in a place where you can always hear it. It’ll be almost like she’s singing or talking to you.

Plant a Tree
Plant mom’s favorite fruit tree. Each year, when it bears fruit, make her favorite treat and serve it at a meal in her honor.
